Chapter 2 : A Rolling Restoration

With the car in daily use I embarked upon what's euphemistically called a "rolling restoration". What this really means is that you roll along until something falls off, and then you fix it.

"I thought you were buying a good car ?"

This is a good one dear....

"Then why are you always fiddling with it ?"

I'm fine-tuning it dear.....

"well would you mind fine-tuning the garden this week-end ?"

Ahhh..

As you can see in this shot, the easiest way to tune the engine is to get in there with it, at least it knows you're serious then.

Really, the car was coming on quite well now. New springs and dampers all round were the next priority, followed very quickly with Spyder wishbones and some new tyres.

Oh, and a few sets of rear wheel bearings and UJ's. Chris Foulds warned me they were an annual item on a seriously used car, no, surely not Chris ?

Oh, what do you mean, "failed MoT" ? With 2 bearings and 2 UJs even a slight amount of wear gives some play at the wheel and someone used to checking modern cars thinks it's worn out.

Solution ? I really don’t know but I’m good at replacing the rear suspension by year 3 !

As you can see, I don't aim to get a concours car, just an honestly presented car which gets us from A to B.

And preferably on the same day we start out...
