It’s 1995. The Europa restoration has stalled due to lack of enthusiasm or just plain bone idleness, I’ll let you decide.

We have been tempted to the dark side of sports car motoring with Japanese cars in the shape of the MR2. Sports cars that don’t break down or leak and heck, they even start when you turn the key.

Lotus announce a new design concept, the Elise, which has modern technology but retro looks. It reminds me of the 246 Dino and I can feel myself wavering on buying a new MX5.

Surely in the 1990s Lotus can make a reliable sports car ?

The Elise is launched but there are problems. Overheating, leaking hoods, "Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious" reliability and yet remarkably Lotus just can’t make them fast enough.

Waiting lists are 12 months long and people are paying over the new list price to get a second hand car.

Sanity returns, I give up and swop the MR2 for an MX5. Motoring continues to be reliable......
